Uwiro Village council makes a commitment to becoming the first Green Village, a very exciting prospect for villagers, councilmembers, and Green Village staff

Green Village = Green Future: Uwiro in Momella

There are many local villages in need of environmental, economic, health, and educational assistance.  However, given the very recent development of the organization, we are currently working one village at a time.

Our first village project is taking place in Uwiro Village, in the Momella region of Tanzania.  Uwiro is located outside the entrance to Arusha National Park.  Uwiro is a long-standing village and works together as a community, with a strong council and community commitment.  While all of these features make Momella the ideal setting for economic development, the village is currently experiencing an economic standstill, unable to take advantage of the growing eco-tourism opportunities in the local area.  They have water sources, but need safe drinking water. It is a hard-working community that simply needs a helping hand.

Uwiro project work began in August 2009, with 3 environmental training meetings, installation of a 90-bin trash gathering, sorting, and recycling program, and distribution of reuseable market bags to reduce plastic trash in the community.  Monthly visits from local volunteers demonstrate that the village is continuing to handle its trash program properly, and they are awaiting the next step - training and construction of clean drinking water systems for each family, systems that can be provided for only $20 per family.  This element of the project will take place in 2010, followed by green business training and micro-loans in the 2010-2011 project year.  For more information about intitial project activities, please click on our recent newsletter on the main page of this site.
