A typical slow sand water filtering system can provide up to 18 gallons of clean drinking water per day, using no electricity or chemicals. Green Village systems will be constructed of concrete and recycled materials, to avoid increasing plastic waste through our project activities.
Our most recent project for 2010 is the Clean Drinking Water Campaign. In 2010, 300 families will receive clean drinking water systems for their homes that use locally-available and inexpensive materials for construction, and provide up to 18 gallons of clean drinking water per day for each family.
Green Village will send our African project manager and one selected Uwiro villager to Kenya for training in system construction. Then they will return to the village to train a team of 5 volunteers to construct and maintain the systems in 300 homes in Uwiro proper.
Not only will this ensure clean drinking water for this first village, it will also ensure that Green Village staff and local villagers have a life-long skill to build and maintain drinking water systems - a skill that will be applied in many villages to come and provide individuals with marketable skills that help local communities in their area. A typical example of how the Green Village concept - train, implement, maintain, and pass on - works to exponentially grow communities in responsible ways.
To sponsor a family water system takes only $20. If you are interested in becoming a Water Sponsor, please contact our director, Amy Awbrey at aawbrey@gmail.com.
